Requirements to Become a Flight Critical Care Nurse
- A Bachelor of Science in Nursing – BSCN/BN in nursing or other post-secondary degree.
- Current registration or eligible for registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Nova Scotia (CCRNS).
- A minimum of five years clinical experience in health care with a minimum of three years critical care experience in a tertiary care or high volume centre.
- Must maintain active employment in a critical care setting or a high volume ground ambulance system.
- Strong practical knowledge of ICU practices and pharmacology.
- Current Certification of BLS-C and ACLS.
- Compliance with the EMC/EHS LifeFlight Weight policy.
- Must have the ability to lift 50 lbs independently.
- Must successfully pass a pre-employment physical appraisal completed by a physician approved by EHS LifeFlight.
- Pending possible future postings for Flight Critical Care Nurse, if you qualify you may be selected for an interview.
Training Information
- The critical care course at the QEII Hospital in Halifax can be completed on a full-time (three months) or part-time (13 months via distance) basis.
- There are other hospitals outside of Nova Scotia that offer a similar course that would be equivalent.
- This course is required to work in a critical care setting at the hospital.
- You need at least three years of critical care experience before you can be considered for employment at LifeFlight.
- If hired, you would then go through the LifeFlight orientation/training.
Requirements to Become a Flight Critical Care Paramedic
- Prequisite: Apply for employment as an Advanced Care Paramedic with our ground ambulance service. If selected for an interview and successful in the application process, employment begins in the ground ambulance system.
- Pending possible future postings for Flight Critical Care Paramedic, if you qualify you may be selected for an interview.
- ACP/CCP Certification.
- Experienced ACP with the ability to complete an EHSNS approved CCP Paramedic training program and be registered in good standing in the Province of Nova Scotia as a CCP paramedic or equivalent.
- A minimum of five years clinical experience in health care with a minimum of three years pre-hospital/critical care experience as an ACP or greater in a tertiary care centre or high volume ground ambulance system.
- Must maintain active employment in a critical care setting or a high volume ground ambulance system.
- Current Certification of BLS-C and ACLS.
- Compliance with the EMC/EHS LifeFlight Weight Policy.
- Must have the ability to lift 50 lbs independently.
