EHS Paramedics Offer Relief Efforts in Meat Cove

Since August 22, the small community of Meat Cove experienced high winds and heavy rains that washed out bridges, roads and culverts. This environmental damage cut off the ability of emergency services to reach this small rural community.

Meat Cove and surrounding communities had approximately 80 residents and a handful of vacationing tourists (approximately 20) at the time of the disaster. Most of the tourists left the community via boats piloted by local fisherman. The same local fishermen were shipping supplies in from neighboring towns and assisting people who needed to leave the community.

On August 23, the Department of Health requested EHS to embed paramedics in Meat Cove to provide temporary emergency and primary health services for the community.

Within 24 hours, EHS paramedics arrived at Meat Cove and immediately set up a command post, a temporary medical clinic, and secured resources to respond to emergencies via local resources.
